Photo: NEMA The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed its Emergency Response Team following an incident involving a passenger train travelling from Itakpe to Warri along the Agbor axis of Delta State. The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, noting that the incident occurred on June 8, 2026. According to the statement, the Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, activated the agency’s response mechanism immediately after receiving an alert on the incident. The statement read, “The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed its Emergency Response Team following an incident involving a passenger train travelling from Itakpe to Warri along the Agbor axis of Delta State on Monday, 8th June, 2026. “The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, upon receiving an alert on the incident, immediately activated the Agency’s response mechanism and deployed an Emergency Response Team.” NEMA said its Director General had also reached out to the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to coordinate intervention efforts and provide support to affected passengers. “The Director General has been in contact with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and assured him of NEMA’s support. The Agency’s response team is collaborating with the NRC, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to provide necessary assistance to the passengers, ensure their safety, and support operations,” the statement added. The Nigerian Railway Corporation said emergency response teams had been mobilised to the scene to assist passengers and assess the situation. Initial reports indicated that four coaches were affected in the derailment, while the corporation pledged to provide further updates as investigations continued. The latest incident adds to a series of disruptions recorded on the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor in recent years. In November 2025, The PUNCH reported that the NRC suspended services on the route following another derailment near Agbor, Delta State, just days after train operations had resumed on the corridor. Preliminary investigations at the time suggested that suspected track vandalism may have contributed to the accident. As of the time of filing this report, NEMA had not disclosed the cause of the incident or the number of casualties.
