Ukraine Intensifies Drone Attacks on Russian Ships Near Crimea

Ukraine has stepped up its drone campaign against Russian maritime supply routes near occupied Crimea, targeting oil tankers and other vessels in what officials describe as an effort to disrupt fuel deliveries and military logistics.

According to Ukraine's drone force commander, Robert Brovdi, more than 25 ships have been struck and set ablaze over the past four days in the Sea of Azov. Ukrainian military officials claim the actual number of targeted vessels is even higher, although independent verification of every strike has not been possible.

The attacks are part of what Ukraine calls a "logistics lockdown," aimed at cutting off supply routes into and out of Russian-occupied Crimea. Several of the targeted vessels are believed to belong to Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which transports oil and fuel.

Satellite imagery has shown a noticeable reduction in tanker traffic around Kerch Port following earlier attacks, while fresh images captured this week revealed smoke rising from damaged vessels near the Crimean coast. Ukrainian officials also released footage showing naval drones approaching Russian tankers before impact.

Russian authorities confirmed that at least two tankers were attacked in Taganrog Bay, although they said the vessels were empty at the time. Ukraine, however, claimed some of the ships had been carrying thousands of tonnes of fuel destined for Crimea.

The maritime strikes come alongside continued Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and fuel depots, which have contributed to fuel shortages in several parts of Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has defended the strategy, saying Russia should experience the consequences of the war it continues to wage.

Military analysts believe the growing drone campaign poses a significant challenge to Russia's ability to maintain fuel supplies and protect shipping routes around Crimea. Pro-Russian military bloggers have also criticized the lack of protection for commercial tankers, warning that they have become easy targets for Ukrainian drone operators.

As fighting continues, the latest attacks mark another escalation in the conflict, highlighting Ukraine's increasing use of unmanned naval technology to pressure Russian forces and disrupt critical supply lines.
