The NFL said on Tuesday that the Competition Committee has made sportsmanship a point of emphasis over the years, including sportsmanship at joint practices and the league told every team about that emphasis this summer. "All clubs were reminded by memo prior to training camp of their responsibility in preventing unsportsmanlike behavior at joint practices that has the potential to result in injury," a league spokesperson said in a statement Thursday. Fights occurred on both fields after the teams split up to work their offenses and defenses against each other. Punches were thrown on both fields, and play had to be stopped multiple times on one field due to Saints offensive players and Cowboys defensive players rushing over to join the fray. One player tossed a helmet in one instance and in another skirmish, a player was body-slammed to the ground. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer and Saints coach Kellen Moore discussed at one point whether to call practice early, but they decided to end the session on time. Schottenheimer said earlier on Tuesday that the NFL had requested the film of the practice to review the altercations. Team fines are appealable. "Obviously there was a lot of non-football stuff in that joint practice unfortunately," Moore said on Thursday. "We had a clean one today [against the Rams], we had a clean one with Jacksonville last week. We had some really good work overall. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones called the fine "stiff," although he said the club will appeal the penalty. "[The fine] does make the point that it's a serious matter and it starts with everybody at all levels of a club -- and the clubs in this case where two are practicing together," Jones said Thursday. "It really emphasizes the league's intent to control it from the very top, which when they start dealing out those kinds of fines, they get your attention." While there were two NFL officiating crews on hand for the practice, Jones said the lack of consequences in a practice can lead to things getting out of hand. "This game is physical and it's easy to get involved with aggressive temperaments," Jones said. "All of that makes it a real focal point in the league to stay within good sport. And taking of helmets off and swinging and hitting and that type of thing is not good for anybody and it's certainly not what we want to represent to our fans as a league or as a team. So it's understandable how they're coming down with a real severe fines." Jones said the Cowboys would fine their individual players, which is allowable under the CBA, that were involved in the fracases. Donovan Ezeiruaku was thrown out of practice for throwing a punch. It was the second time he was ejected for throwing a punch in training camp. "You have to have consequences and that needs to register," Jones said. "In other words, we all know whether you're playing a game or out here in society, if you aren't sensitive about the consequences of your behavior, then you'll get brought to your knees quick. This is something that, knowing him, I think he has the capability of being sensitive to consequences."
