One commonly cited example is Emirates’ fifth-freedom flight between New York (JFK) and Milan (MXP).Based on JAL’s distance-based partner award chart, this route should cost just 42,000 miles in business class because the flight falls into the 2,001-to-4,000-mile distance band.However, we were never able to find this elusive flight. While Emirates showed saver-level (the lowest award price) business class redemption options on the JFK-to-Milan route, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank didn't yield any results for the same flight and date.This doesn’t necessarily mean the award is never bookable. Partner airlines don’t always make the same award inventory available to every loyalty program, and availability can change from day to day.Still, it highlights an important point: Don’t assume a published sweet spot will actually be available before transferring your points. Because partner awards are priced based on the total distance flown, travelers may be able to visit multiple destinations on one award without paying for each flight separately.During our research, we attempted to build a two-segment Korean Air itinerary that complied with JAL’s published routing rules. Although the individual flights were available, we weren’t able to find award availability for the same itinerary through Japan Airlines Mileage Bank.While cash availability doesn’t guarantee award availability, these searches illustrate how difficult it can be to verify whether JAL’s published routing rules are actually usable. The multi-city trip makes testing different dates and itineraries makes a time-consuming process even more arduous.New JAL members have to wait 60 days to redeem miles If you’re planning to transfer points to Japan Airlines for an upcoming redemption, don’t wait until the last minute to create your Mileage Bank account. According to Japan Airlines, some newly opened accounts may be restricted from redeeming award tickets for up to 60 days after enrollment.If you’re planning a trip to Japan, register for a JAL account well in advance. That way you won’t risk missing out on the award you want simply because your account is too new.The bottom lineJapan Airlines award tickets can deliver excellent value, but travelers should set realistic expectations.
