Answer engine optimization is disrupting search as we know it. What once was predictable — add a keyword, focus on high-quality backlinks, increase your domain rating — has become a new game that doesn’t play by the same rules. But the brands showing up inside AI answers right now aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest domains or the deepest backlink profiles. They’re the ones that built content answer engines actually trust — and learned to keep earning that trust on repeat. I spent the back half of last year digging into citation data across the major answer engines. I also got an early look at HubSpot’s State of AEO report, which pulled thousands of citation data points from six-plus answer engines and surveyed 4,000+ global marketers. What jumped out wasn’t a single magic tactic. It was a pattern. The brands earning citations at scale behave in remarkably consistent ways. As AJ Ghergich, VP of AI & Consulting Services at Botify, put it on a recent episode of the Found in AI podcast: “You don’t rank in AI. It’s stochastic.” You can’t claw your way to position one in a generated answer. You can only become the kind of source an engine reaches for when a user prompts a question. Traditional SEO rewards a page for being findable. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization, the practice of improving how often and accurately your brand shows up in AI-generated answers — rewards a page for being quotable. An engine has to be able to lift a clean, correct, attributable chunk of your content and drop it into a generated answer with confidence. When I looked across the brands earning the most citations, the same handful of behaviors kept showing up. Here are the five that stood out. See exactly where your brand shows up in answer engines and take action to close AI visibility gaps. The single most repeatable trait of cited content is that it’s built to be extracted. Answer engines don’t read your blog post like a human curling up with coffee. They parse it, chunk it, and pull the piece that answers the question. Messy content gives them nothing clean to grab. HubSpot’s State of AEO found that pages with more headings and more heading depth (think: H3s and H4s, not just H2s) correlated with higher citation rates — and that citations peaked for pages carrying 7 to 15 H2s. More headings mean more clearly labeled, self-contained answers that an engine can lift. What high-citation brands do: Write in scannable answers with clear H2s and H3s, definitions stated up front, short paragraphs, lists, and labeled sections. They make it almost effortless for a machine to find the exact sentence it needs. Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness, or E-E-A-T. Google’s old acronym didn’t go anywhere — if anything, answer engines lean on it harder, because they’re staking their own credibility on whatever they cite. Cited pages tend to carry visible trust markers, like real author bios with credentials, outbound links to sources and data, original research, and consistent brand signals across the web. The engines are essentially asking, “Can I vouch for this?” What high-citation brands do: Add EEAT signals to your website, blog, and social content. The more often AI engines associate your name or brand with a topic, the more likely they are to recognize your entity authority.
